The city of Mountain View is holding a public hearing at 5:30 tonight in the city council chambers for input regarding the proposed twin 10-story apartment structures for 2400 El Camino Real West. The high-profile development stands to have an impact on neighboring north Los Altos.

The project, called Skyview Apartments, will be located between Ortega Avenue and Showers Drive.

At a hearing last night, the city introduced and described the project, said the city's project manager, Mary Fulford.

At the hearing tonight, city staff and project consultants will discuss specific aspects of the project, such as traffic, parking and development standards, Fulford said.

City-hired parking and traffic consultants will be present as well as the city's traffic engineer, said a spokesman for the Skyview project.

Three parking studies have been done as well as "a pretty extensive traffic analysis," he said.

Traffic is of concern to the city of Los Altos. Both Planning Director Larry Tong and Mayor Kris Casto have sent letters to Mountain View.

Tong wrote that "the traffic impact analysis is not adequate without the consideration of additional traffic on Jordan Avenue through Los Altos."

Casto urged Mountain View to "carefully review the proposal with respect to traffic impacts," particularly "cut-through traffic."

The Skyview plan complies with the Mountain View general plan, is consistent with previous approvals, there are no variances requested, and it complies with all city guidelines, said a Skyview spokesman.

The applicant, which is also the owner and developer of the property, is the San Jose-based Avalon Bay Communities, a company that specializes in upscale apartments and mixed-use projects.

The project includes 127 one-bedroom units, 95 two-bedroom units and 16 three-bedroom units. They will range in size from 850 to 2,000 square feet.

Tonight's hearing will be in the Mountain View city council chambers, on the second floor of city hall, 500 Castro St., Mountain View. For more information, call 903-6306. Another hearing is scheduled for Sept. 2. On Sept. 8 the item will be on the city council agenda.
