Tree Farm pulled from council agenda
The Tree Farm applicants pulled their project from the Los Altos City Council agenda just hours before it was scheduled for final design review.
The mixed-use development planned for a 4.7-acre parcel on El Camino Real between Los Altos Avenue and San Antonio Road in Los Altos, includes a 95,000-square-foot office on the front of the parcel on El Camino Real, a 131-unit extended stay Marriott hotel on the rear of the site and eight very-low, below-market- rate rental condos.
"We need to resolve some issues with Marriott and the prospective buyer for the front piece," said Beverly Brockway, one of the developers of the project.
Brockway said they want to meet with the city before the project goes to the council and were unable to schedule a meeting before the Aug. 18 council meeting.
Jim Mackenzie, senior planner with the city of Los Altos, said the item is scheduled for the Sept. 8 city council agenda.
Worker Center awarded $20,000
The San Mateo-based Peninsula Community Foundation announced Aug. 10 that it was awarding a $20,000 grant to the St. Joseph the Worker Center located in Los Altos.
This is the second year for a $20,000 grant from the foundation, said Elizabeth Keller, executive director of the center.
The day-laborer center, on El Camino Real and Jordan Avenue, offers training for workers and a place for them to wait for prospective employers. The center began in 1996 as an alternative for workers who were congregating on street corners looking for work.
At the center, the day workers, who are primarily Latino, now may study English and learn computer skills, as well as attend workshops on health and employment issues, while waiting for work.
