Various friends have joined her over the years. While some of them have hiked the entire trail with Marin, most have settled for segments of six, 10 or 16 miles. However, this year was different - in terms of participation and speed. On Aug. 1, Marin was accompanied by 11 friends when she left the Saratoga Gap Trailhead at 6:10 a.m. The group, which included four members in their 60s, first covered the 16 miles to Big Basin State Park. Marin and four others - Barbara Allen, Kathy Besuner, Sharon Vick and Annie Wilson - then completed the trail by trekking another 10.3 miles to Waddell Beach. Ranging in age from 51-56, the five ladies proved that age is no obstacle when it comes to hiking. They walked the entire trail in just under eight hours, doing so amid a summer heat wave. As a reward for their perseverance, Marin's husband David greeted the group with a champagne picnic at the end of the trail. |
