As reported in the Sept. 5, 1973, issue of the Town Crier, the Northern California Youth Soccer Association had mushroomed 600 percent in the previous three years. Making up a large part of this group was the Metro Pal Soccer League, which included all of Santa Clara County.
In Los Altos, more than 300 youths had signed up for the soccer tournaments. Teams consisted of youths 6 to 14 years old, but the age limit for girls increased to 16 in 1973.
Nearly 30 school buses took up lots of the parking space at Foothill College while 850 drivers from throughout the state met on Aug. 30, 1973, to discuss mutual problems.
One of the seminars that many drivers obviously felt was apropos was titled, "How to handle students on the bus."
The Los Altos Hills Association's Board of Directors voted to give Florence Fava, town historian, a lifetime membership in appreciation of her efforts of preserving the town's heritage and keeping residents aware of the town's history.

As reported in the Sept. 2, 1948, edition of the Los Altos News, "Downtown Los Altos was overdue for a disastrous fire, and it is only by a miracle the town has so far escaped," warned Fire Chief Harold Beck in late August 1948.
He said that almost all burning in the business district was in violation of the law and citations could be issued upon refusal to cooperate, with a fine of $100 and 30 days in jail.
Paul Myers was named chairman of the planning committee organized by the Los Altos Citizens Association, it was announced Sept. 1, 1948. The group planned to study the various needs of the community and assist in drawing up a master plan for future Los Altos.
The association was a nonprofit organization, open to the public, and it had been organized to help find solutions to local problems and to help Los Altos become an ideal residential community.
Inauguration of nationwide-worldwide air parcel post on Sept. 1, 1948, afforded the most modern and expeditious delivery service in the world, according to local postmaster Percy Helena. The specialized airborne service offered patrons unexcelled shipping facilities.
"With a scheduled plane taking off or landing within the United States on an average of every seven seconds around the clock, and an overseas-bound plane leaving United States every 30 minutes ... it's the fastest parcel post service offered anywhere," Helena said.
