LA Art Docents coffee today

The Los Altos Arts Docents are currently recruiting new volunteers to assist in bringing art into Los Altos School District classrooms. Those interested will spend the next five months training in several hands-on and art appreciation units. These units are a sampling of the more than 40 classes in watercolor, clay, brush painting, graphic design, print making and art appreciation that docents teach in kindergarten through eighth grade.

An introductory coffee is slated for 10 a.m., today, in the board room of the Los Altos School District offices, 201 Covington Road. For more information, call 941-4010, ext. 18.

LAH cleanup day set for this Saturday

The town of Los Altos Hills will be offering a townwide cleanup day this Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents may bring their trash to the following locations: the town hall parking lot; Magdalena Avenue at Highway 280 (solid waste only); Foothill College, parking lot C; Altamont Road at Black Mountain Road; Westwind Barn; Page Mill Road at Arastradero (west).

Solid waste and recyclables will be accepted; up to 30 gallons per household of construction debris may be brought. Yard trimmings which are less than 6 inches in diameter and less than 6 feet long are OK.

Fall arts lectures at Los Altos library

The Los Altos Arts Committee and the Friends of the Los Altos Library are teaming up to offer three free leactures on the arts at the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

The first lecture, set for Sept. 16, features historian Joe Marchi speaking on the history of the American musical and the works of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hart, and George Gershwin. The second lecture, scheduled for Oct. 21, is titled, "Picasso, the War Years," and based on an exhibit at the De-Young Museum in San Francisco. The final lecture, "Food in Art: A Feast for the Eyes," is set for Nov. 18. Kay Payne, head of a docent program for San Francisco museums, will talk about the DeYoung exhibit featuring the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Paul Cezanne and others.

Each lecture is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the program room at the library. For more information, call 948-8710.

Town Choir rehearsals begin

The Los Altos Town Choir will begin rehearsals Sept. 13 for the choir's 1948 Hit Parade concert scheduled for Nov. 14.

Choir members will be practicing to perform such songs as, "Buttons and Bows," "On A Slow Boat To China," "It's Magic," "I'm Looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover," "Mañana," and patriotic songs for a "Salute To America" program to honor veterans.

The first rehearsal is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, El Monte Avenue and Cuesta Drive. For more information, call Pam Johnson at (408) 736-2701.

Mixed paper recycling begins in Mtn. View

As of this past Tuesday, the city of Mountain View and Foothill Disposal are adding mixed paper and cardboard collection to the city's curbside recycling program. Materials such as junk mail, magazines, envelopes, catalogs, cereal boxes, notebook paper or cardboard boxes can now be recycled through the new program instead of tossed in the trash.

The program will be phased in citywide over a five-week period, with single-family homes receiving a black recycling bin for mixed paper or cardboard. Cardboard must be flattened, with dimensions not to exceed 2-by-2 feet, and must be stacked next to collection bins or toters.

Composting basics workshop offered

Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are sponsoring a workshop, in conjunction with the Santa Clara County Home Composting Education Program, on "Composting basics," from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 12, at the Hillview Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. Master composter volunteers from the county conduct the class. For more information, call (408) 299-4147.

Newcomers Club welcomes members

The Newcomers Club of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills invites newcomers, those who have moved into the community within the past two years, to two upcoming events. There will be a coffee at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 and the club's annual champagne brunch at 11 a.m. Sept. 13.

The club offers many activities including tennis, bridge, golf and book groups plus a monthly TGIF wine and cheese party.

Friends of the Library used-book sale

The Friends of the Library of Los Altos hosts its fall used-book sale 10 a.m. on Sept. 12 and noon on Sept. 13. A members-only sale will be held from 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. The sale will be held at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

On Sunday books are sold by the bag. Bags are $2 each at the door, and there is no limit to the number of bags purchased. Proceeds from the sale go to the library. For more information call Judy Simpson at 941-4464.

Hidden Villa recruits volunteers

Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos Hills, a 1,600-acre wilderness preserve, welcomes volunteers to serve as naturalists or guides to the 20,000 school children who visit the farm each school year.

Hidden Villa teachers and guides train volunteers to become members of the preserve's team. Orientation will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Visitor's Center. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of two hours one morning per week, Tuesday to Friday. For more information, call Kath or Chris at 949-8643.

Coast Guard offers boating skills class

The U. S. Coast Guard offers a 13-session class in boating skills and seamanship from 7-9 p.m. beginning Sept. 14. The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela St., Mountain View.

Habitat hikes, pond prowls

The Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District welcomes volunteers to be outdoor recreation leaders. These volunteers work with small groups of students on habitat hikes. A comprehensive hands-on training program will be held on Tuesdays this fall. There will be an informational meeting at the district office at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22, 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos. Classes for aspiring leaders

Leadership Education Advancement, or LEAD, a community involvement education course sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation, is seeking participants for a monthly course aimed at persons interested in taking on a leadership role.

Classes start this month at various locations in Los Altos and will be held once a month for eight months. This is the fourth year for the course.
