The owners of the property, on which there is a Gas'N'Save service station, applied to the city on Aug. 5 for a general plan amendment, rezoning and a tentative subdivision map. The proposal is to change the site to R1-10 zoning, which is a quarter-acre minimum, to create two single-family residential lots similar to the adjoining lots on Estate Drive. The designs of the homes would be submitted later if the city approves the land use change and subdivision. Senior planner Jim Mackenzie said that, at the city staff's request, applications have provided a traffic evaluation for the new driveway locations, an arborist's report for the oak trees and a noise impact analysis for traffic noise affects on the new homes to help in the environmental review of the proposed change. The item is tentatively scheduled for a public hearing at either the Sept. 17 or the Oct. 1 planning commission meeting. Customers have been told the station may be open another 90 days. 401 Rosita plans on back burner Representatives from the Los Altos School District and the city of Los Altos are still discussing joint use for constructing a city recreation center and playing fields. But no decision is coming soon regarding where or when this might happen. The city owns the 5.5-acre former St. William School site at 401 Rosita Avenue, which it bought in 1996 for recreation use. After six months of intensive planning in 1997, a task force recommended, and the city council approved, a plan that involved joint use with the adjoining Covington School site. After studying its own needs, the school district, in June 1998, said no to joint use at Covington because the district needed to reopen the school. In the meantime, the city council authorized money for some demolition and grading of the Rosita site so playing fields might be ready for spring 1999. Jay Beals, of Beals Landscape Architecture, is preparing a grading plan and cost estimates for renovating the existing field and possible field expansion into the area of the convent and classrooms, said Bruce Bane, director of public works for Los Altos. The city staff will be reporting on this at a September council meeting, Bane said. Currently, Mayor Kris Casto and city councilman Francis La Poll represent the city, and trustees Gerri Carlton and Jay Thomas represent the school District, on a subcommittee that meets twice monthly to continue conversations about joint use. San Antonio Repaving Project Work on the San Antonio road repaving project is ahead of schedule, said Bruce Bane, director of public works for Los Altos. Cost of the project is $399,000. All repaving is complete. Workers are now finishing striping and raising utility covers. - Joanne Griffith Domingue |
