The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School Board of Trustees approved upgrades for the pool at Los Altos High and for the planned multi-use rooms at both high schools during the regular meeting Aug. 24. The approved upgrades will increase the pool from its present size of 25 yards by 20 meters to 25 yards by 30 meters and will allow more flexibility in the multi-use rooms. Mary Morris, architect for the Steinberg Group, said the expanded pool will be able to accommodate nine lanes for competitive swimming - eight is the minimum number required for swim meets. She said the pool will allow for concurrent practices and will support a larger shallow end for the physical education department's swim classes. Morris said the original upgrades included resurfacing the pool only. Morris said community-user groups said the original plans would not have been adequate to meet their needs. The new plan will cost $173,000 above the initial $660,000 renovation estimates, said Robyn Phillips, associate superintendent of business services. She said the district will use $101,000 from its bond fund and user groups will kick in the remaining $71,000. "I think this will create a positive model for us to say, 'here's what another group did. They kicked in and made a commitment,'" said superintendent Rich Fischer. Morris said upgraded plans for the multi-use buildings will allow more flexibility to accomadate more students. Pool renovations are expected to be completed near August. Work on the multipurpose buildings is scheduled to begin next summer and be completed by September 2000. |
