The historic setting, now the home of Bob and Susan Wayman, proved ideal for a party with live music, a summer buffet, and people dressed in costumes from the early 1900s through the 1930s. Los Altos' first full-time History House Museum director Madelyne Crawford was introduced to the group. Fund-raising chairwoman Ginny Lear said that with the new director's arrival, and less than $175,000 to raise, plans are moving rapidly to finalize the internal exhibit space requirements on the new 8,200-square-foot center. Bob Grimm spoke about the final phases of the project, which will soon allow architect Goodwin Steinberg of Steinberg and Associates in San Jose to proceed with final drawings for construction bidding. A spring start to building is planned, with a grand opening seen for November 1999. Fund-raising will continue as supporters solicit contributions through a mailing in early November. Also, new volunteers will begin to be recruited throughout the coming months. When the new facility opens, additional docents will be needed to staff tours, manage the archives, computer research areas and a small gift shop. The Education Center, to be located beside the Los Altos History House Museum at 51 S. San Antonio Road, will serve as an historical research facility and museum for the greater Los Altos-Los Altos Hills community.
