Fall arts lectures at Los Altos library

The Los Altos Arts Committee and the Friends of the Los Altos Library are teaming up to offer three free leactures on the arts at the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

The first lecture, set for Sept. 16, features historian Joe Marchi speaking on the history of the American musical and the works of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hart, and George Gershwin. The second lecture, scheduled for Oct. 21, is titled, "Picasso, the War Years," and based on an exhibit at the De-Young Museum in San Francisco. The final lecture, "Food in Art: A Feast for the Eyes," is set for Nov. 18. Kay Payne, head of a docent program for San Francisco museums, will talk about the DeYoung exhibit featuring the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Paul Cezanne and others.

Each lecture is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the program room at the library. For more information, call 948-8710.

Town Choir rehearsals begin

The Los Altos Town Choir will begin rehearsals Sunday for the choir's 1948 Hit Parade concert scheduled for Nov. 14.

Choir members will be practicing to perform such songs as, "Buttons and Bows," "On A Slow Boat To China," "It's Magic," "I'm Looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover," "Mañana," and patriotic songs for a "Salute To America" program to honor veterans.

The first rehearsal is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, El Monte Avenue and Cuesta Drive. For more information, call Pam Johnson at (408) 736-2701.

Mixed paper recycling begins in Mtn. View

The city of Mountain View and Foothill Disposal are adding mixed paper and cardboard collection to the city's curbside recycling program. Materials such as junk mail, magazines, envelopes, catalogs, cereal boxes, notebook paper or cardboard boxes can now be recycled through the new program instead of tossed in the trash.

Composting basics workshop offered

Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are sponsoring a workshop, in conjunction with the Santa Clara County Home Composting Education Program, on "Composting basics," from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, at the Hillview Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. Master composter volunteers from the county conduct the class. For more information, call (408) 299-4147.

Humanitarian Awards at Hidden Villa

Hidden Villa is honoring Michael Pritchard, Pat and Jim Compton, and Judge LaDoris Cordell as 1998 winners of the Josephine and Frank Duveneck Humanitarian Awards, to be presented at a special dinner on Sept. 19, at Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills.

The awards recognize national and local individuals whose lives and accomplishments demonstrate respect for human dignity and diversity, and the protection of the natural environment. These values capture the Duveneck's vision and philosophy in founding Hidden Villa and its programs.

Tickets for the awards dinner cost $125 per person, of which $80 is a tax deductible contribution to Hidden Villa. For information, call 949-8652.

Friends of the Library used-book sale

The Friends of the Library of Los Altos hosts its fall used-book sale from 10 a.m.to noon on Saturday and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. A members-only sale will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Friday. The sale will be held at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

On Sunday books are sold by the bag. Bags are $2 each at the door, and there is no limit to the number of bags purchased. Proceeds from the sale go to the library. For more information call Judy Simpson at 941-4464.

Perry speaks for World Affairs

Former U.S. secretary of defense and current Los Altos resident William J. Perry will be the featured speaker Sunday at the annual fall kickoff for the Peninsula chapter of the World Affairs Council of Northern California.

Perry, the keynote speaker at the July 4 Los Altos Veterans Memorial dedication at Shoup Park, will talk on "Preventive Defense: A Strategy for American Security in the 21st Century."

The event, held at a private Atherton estate, begins with a reception at 3 p.m., followed by the program at 3:45 p.m. Cost is $15 for World Affairs Council members, $17 for non-members.
