How do you rate as a driver? Are you a zero, five or a 10? The hoped-for answer is zero. That means you drive zero mph over the speed limit on Los Altos streets.
The daily commuters passing through our city on their way elsewhere might be inclined to not drive through our city if all residents were driving the limit, not 5 or 10 mph over the limit. Our streets would then be safer for children on their way to school and for the rest of us.
Second question: What do the following streets, or parts thereof, have in common? Los Altos Avenue, Almond Avenue, Springer Road, El Monte Avenue, Cuesta Drive, Truman Avenue, Fallenleaf Avenue and St. Joseph Avenue? Answer: the posted speed limit is 25 mph. A general rule of thumb is the limit is 25 mph on a two-lane street and 35 on a four-lane street.
The Year of the Good Neighbor Committee is challenging you to drive the speed limit this fall. Another way to be a good neighbor is to be a considerate driver. Courtesy is contagious.
