Increasing social skills with ADD patients

Lynn Henderson, Ph.D., a locally-based, clinical psychologist will talk on increasing social skills in adults with Attention Deficit Disorder at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 23, at El Camino Hospital, 2500 Grant Road, Mountain View.

Henderson will interact with the audience and offer suggestions for improvement in both in the workplace and in relationships.

Mixed paper recycling begins in Mtn. View

The city of Mountain View and Foothill Disposal are adding mixed paper and cardboard collection to the city's curbside recycling program. Materials such as junk mail, magazines, envelopes, catalogs, cereal boxes, notebook paper or cardboard bozes can now be recycled through the new program instead of tossed in the trash.

The program will be phased in citywide over a five-week period, with single-family homes receiving a black recycling bin for mixed paper or cardboard.

Sunbird Gallery presents impressionist

Sunbird Gallery of Los Altos will feature internationally known artist Guido Frick, a German impressionist, in an exhibition set to open today and to run through Sept. 26. A champagne reception is scheduled for the artist 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

Senior Day Heath 'Tailgate' party

The Association for Senior Day Health and Armadillo Willy's are holding the 22nd annual Tailgate, set for 12:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Lawn Bowling Green, Embarcadero Road and Cowper Street, Palo Alto. The menu includes barbecued ribs and chicken, beans, cole slaw and potato salad.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Senior Day Health Program, 701 E. Meadow Drive, Palo Alto.

The health program is a daytime facility that encourages independence and well-being of less independent older adults while providing respite to their families and caregivers.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children ages 6-14. Under 6 is free. For more information, call 322-5145.

Newcomers Club welcomes members

The Newcomers Club of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills invites newcomers, those who have moved into the community within the past two years, to its annual champagne brunch. The brunch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday.

The club offers many activities including tennis, bridge, golf and book groups plus a monthly TGIF wine and cheese party.

Alto-View Newcomers

The Alto-View Newcomers' Club, a nonprofit oganization serving families in both Los Altos and Mountain View, regularly sponsors a variety of activities, including wine tastings, moms and tots get-togethers, a book club and tennis and pot luck dinners.

Habitat hikes, pond prowls

The Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District welcomes volunteers to be outdoor recreation leaders.

A comprehensive hands-on training program will be held on Tuesdays this fall. There will be an informational meeting at the district office at 7 p.m. Tuesday, 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos.

Classes for young aspiring leaders

The Los Altos Community Foundation is offering a five-day workshop for fourth-through-sixth grade students who may be interested in community involvement.

The workshop, held once a week for five weeks beginning Sept. 28, includes meetings with Los Altos Mayor Kris Casto and state Assemblyman Jim Cunneen.

Garden club to hold plant sale

The Garden Club of Los Altos will hold its fall plant and bake sale 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, on the Creekside Room patio of the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos.

Unusual plants, dried floral bouquets, produce and homemade bake goods will be available at reasonable prices, according to members.

The public is invited to attend the sale and also stay for the 1:30 p.m. program, featuring Dr. Don Mahoney, manager of the nursery at Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park.

The program costs $5.
