Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian returned to Bosnia and Herzegovina as an elections supervisor for the Bosnian national elections this past weekend.

Simitian and the other members of a team selected by the U.S. State Department supervised the voting process and the subsequent vote count. This year's elections are critical, as voters will select leaders to fill the three-member presidency of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Presidency of Republika Srpska, various legislative seats, and 11 municipal councils.

"It is gratifying to be asked a second time to participate in the Bosnian elections as a representative of the United States," Simitian said prior to leaving. "Free, fair, and democratic elections are important ... I look forward to playing a modest role in making that happen." Simitian previously served as an elections supervisor in September 1997.
