Town Crier Staff Report

David Smernoff announced his resignation from the Board of Directors of the Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District effective Sept. 1. The board decided to follow the appointment process to fill the vacancy before Oct. 30.

Smernoff moved from Ward 4 to reside in Portola Valley and had to resign his directorship. Ward 4 includes Mountain View and Los Altos, an area bounded by Adobe Creek, Foothill Expressway and Springer Road.

At its Sept. 9 meeting, the board acted to fill the vacancy by appointment instead of calling for a special election within 60 days of the date of resignation. A notice of the vacancy will be posted in at least three places and notices concerning the vacancy will be placed in newspapers.

A letter, signed by the board president, Betsy Crowder, will be sent to elected officials whose electoral areas encompass Ward 4. The letter will announce the vacancy and invite them to suggest individuals who might be interested.

Smernoff was recently married and decided to move to his wife's home in Portola Valley. In his letter to the board he stated:

"Our decision was made more difficult by the high degree of respect I have for my fellow board members and the entire staff of the district. I am confident the success we have shared will continue, and that the challenges we still face will be handled with the utmost concern for the land and the public who use it."

An application form for Director -Ward 4 is available at the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District office at 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos. For more information, call 691-1200.
