The way the Foothill College football program has started the season, the Owls have given notice to opponents that they will be a team to be reckoned with.

Under head coach Marshall Sperbeck, Foothill has posted a pair of shutouts to begin the year after drilling out-manned rival De Anza College 42-0 last Saturday night at Foothill.

Foothill has outscored its two opponents by a 63-0 margin this season. In the opener, the Owls blasted American River 41-0.

The Owls will put their two-game shutout streak on the line this Saturday when they host Kings River College at 7 p.m.

The Foothill defense has been nothing short of overpowering, shutting down the pass and run for two games, while giving the offense a big lift.

"The defense has put our offense in good field position," said Sperbeck. "but the offense needs more consistency."

The offense didn't waste any time putting De Anza (0-2) away last Saturday by racing out to a quick 21-0 first quarter lead via a trio of touchdown passes.

Freshman quarterback Travis Cole had a hot hand early by finding sophomore receiver Errol Johnson (Palo Alto High) for two scoring passes. Cole then connected with receiver T.C. Everett to give the Owls the three-touchdown advantage.

Cole completed 14 of 22 passes for 145 yards and four touchdowns on the evening, with three of the tosses going to Johnson, who transferred from Brigham Young University prior to last season.

The Owls again complemented their potent passing game with a balanced rushing attack. Freshman Johnnie Gray (Gunn High) and fellow freshman Peter Harris each gained 45 yards on nine carries. Gray added an 8-yard touchdown run in the rout.
