St. Francis tops Los Altos in girls tennis

he St. Francis High girls tennis team opened play in the SCVAL De Anza Division last Thursday with a 4-3 win at Los Altos.

The Lancers (4-0 overall) prevailed at No. 3 and 4 singles, plus No. 1 and 2 doubles.

St. Francis winners were Aruna Balakrishnan and Claire Najour in singles, along with Libby Gilpen/Erin Hannon and Sarah Delva/Sarah Collins in doubles.

The Eagles (0-2 league) had little trouble at No. 1 and 2 singles, where Lena Sherbakov and Lan Nguyen won in straight sets. Los Altos avoided getting swept in doubles when the No. 3 team of Julia Bain/Diane Kung won in consecutive sets.

A day later, St. Francis and Los Altos each won non-league matches.

The Lancers breezed by Presentation 6-1 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View, with their lone loss coming at No. 1 singles.

Los Altos also won by a 6-1 score against visiting Leland. The Chargers only win came at No. 2 singles.

Gunn routs Pinewood

Gunn, meanwhile, took care of Pinewood 6-1 in a non-league match last Thursday at home.

Los Altos Hills resident Christine Feng, playing in place of Amy Choy at No. 1 singles, beat Pinewood's Melanie LaVaute 6-0, 6-3.

No. 2 Liying Wang and No. 3 Lauren Glasscock also won in straight sets for Gunn. The Titans improved to 2-1 overall, while Pinewood slipped to 0-4.

The Panthers only victory against Gunn came at No. 4 singles, where Paula Lea edged Jessica Feng 7-6, (7-0), 6-2.
