ountain View High coach Dan Navarro came into the season knowing his team's non-league schedule would be a challenging one.

"I think we play the toughest schedule in the (El Camino Division)," Navarro said. "With a young team, that will either make us better or destroy us."

So far, the Spartans are surviving - if not thriving.

Mountain View opened the season with a hard-fought 14-13 loss to Terra Nova, a game decided by a missed extra point.

The Spartans bounced back with a vengeance last Friday, spanking host Sequoia 31-6.

"We're playing better than expected," Navarro said. "I'm pleased with the effort."

Mountain View racked up nearly 400 yards, according to Navarro, and held Sequoia (1-1) to about 100 yards.

The Spartans also forced five turnovers, including Leemone Young's 85-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Eddie Richardson led Mountain View with 124 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

The Spartans should face a tougher task Saturday against powerhouse Wilcox (2-0). Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Townsend Field in Santa Clara.

St. Francis falls again

St. Francis dropped its second-straight game last Friday, falling 21-14 to Skyline.

The host Lancers had a chance to at least tie the game midway through the fourth quarter, but Ronald Nunn's punt return for an apparent touchdown was negated by a clipping call.

Nunn's touchdown earlier in the quarter stood up, though, as he ripped through the Skyline defense on a 59-yard run. Mike Mayon then tossed a pass to tight end Garrett Cook for the two-point conversion. This closed the gap to 21-14.

The Lancers' first score came on Mayon's 14-yard toss to Cook in the second quarter.

There were few other offensive highlights for St. Francis (1-2), which mustered only 137 yards. Most of these yards came courtesy of Nunn, who carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards.

Los Altos loses at home

Irvington spoiled Los Altos' home opener last Saturday with an 18-3 win.

Los Altos' only points came on a 47-yard field goal by Alex Ware in the opening quarter.

The Eagles (1-1) were led by quarterback Jose Murillo, who rushed for 64 yards and threw for 23 more.

Gunn runs over Indy

Gunn evened its record at 1-1 last Friday with a 28-15 win at Independence.

The Titans ran for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Leading the way was fullback Lei Likio, who had 114 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Justin Silverman ran for 38 yards and two scores.
