Wrap-Up

he injury bug is surfacing once again at Gunn High.

The Titans, who were hindered last year by injuries to seven players, already have two players hurting this season.

Coach John Milkovich was without standout middle blocker Jacqueline Heler last Thursday, as he decided to rest her surgically-repaired knee. Visiting Leigh was able to take advantage with a 7-15, 15-5, 15-13, 15-11 victory.

Los Altos Hills resident Amy Cole led Gunn with eight kills and six aces.

While Heler is expected to play this week, the Titans (6-2) will start its SCVAL El Camino Division schedule without their other middle, Jessica Rybka. Milkovich said she has a rotator cuff injury that will keep her out until at least next week.

Eagles get past Menlo

Los Altos played only one game last week, but made the most of it.

The Eagles beat host Menlo 15-13, 15-2, 8-15, 15-5.

Setter Lisa Rayden totaled 42 assists, which coach Jason Mansfield called "phenomenal" for four games.

Liz Rippetoe had 12 kills and Heather Smith eight. Samantha Quintero and Cassie Toews each recorded nine digs.

Panthers win two more

Pinewood won two of its three matches last week to improve to 8-2 overall.

The Panthers wrapped up their non-league schedule with wins against Homestead and King's Academy and a loss to Valley Christian San Jose in between.

Pinewood disposed of host Homestead in three games last Friday: 15-10, 15-7, 15-9.

Katie Collins paced the Panthers with seven kills and two blocks. Lauren Smith-Hams added six kills against the Mustangs (7-5).

A day earlier, host Valley Christian beat Pinewood 15-11, 15-12, 15-11.

"We came out flat and made a lot of mistakes," said Pinewood coach Evan Barth. "We couldn't pass to save our lives in the first two games."

Smith-Hams had 14 kills to lead the Panthers, while Collins recorded five kills and two blocks. Back-row specialist Erin Wilson had three aces.

On Sept. 15, Pinewood swept visiting King's Academy 15-3, 15-9, 15-5.

Spartans struggling

Mountain View High continued to struggle last week, losing both its matches.

The Spartans dropped a five-game match at Piedmont Hills Sept. 15, then lost to visiting Lynbrook 15-7, 15-11, 15-2 last Thursday.

The Spartans opened play in the SCVAL El Camino Division yesterday at Homestead and will host Santa Clara tomorrow at 7 p.m.
