Partners symposium joins youth, adults

Partners for New Generations, a program that matches needy students with helping adults, is the subject of a symposium scheduled from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, in Graham Middle School's multi-purpose room, 1175 Castro St., Mountain View.

Residents of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Mountain View are invited to learn about volunteer opportunities involving youth, including tutoring, child advocacy, and youth court.

Featured speakers include Leo Chavez, Foothill-De Anza Community College District Chancellor, Richard Fischer, Mountain View-Los Altos High School District Superintendent, Jim Cunneen, Assemblyman, and Bob Hinds, Calif. State Assembly Deputy Associate.

Mediation program basic training course

The Los Altos Mediation Program is offering a 25-hour basic mediation training course. The training deals with conflicts related to neighbors, tenants, small claims and employment disputes. The program will be held Oct. 23-24, 30 and 31 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.

Cost is $300 and the course is limited to 24 persons. For more information, call 949-5267.

Town Choir rehearsals

The second annual Hit Parade Night concert and dance is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Los Altos Youth Center.

Rehearsals of the nostalgic music of 1948 are held each Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, located at Cuesta Drive and El Monte Avenue.

Singers are invited to join the choir and sing hits of yesteryear, including "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" and "Slow Boat to China."

Federated women have luncheon

The Federated Women's Club of Los Altos will next meet 11 a.m., Oct. 7, at Michael's restaurant at Shoreline. A luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m., with sculptress Osprey Orielle Lake presenting her Cheemah Project. Entertainment books will be available. Call (408) 996-0957 for reservations and orders.

Chefs Who Care at La Fiesta

Chefs Who Care, the restaurant fund-raiser for Community Services Agency programs, will next be held 5:15 p.m. Monday at La Fiesta Restaurant, 240 Villa St., Mountain View.

The restaurant is donating $9 of the $16 meal price to the Community Services Agency. For more information and reservations, call 941-4237, ext. 9450.

Los Altos Hills pathways hike

The Los Altos Hills Pathways Committee is hosting a hike on the town's paths from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 10.

The event will begin at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road. A choice of walks, some more hilly that others, is available.

Refreshments will by provided by the Los Altos Hills Committee Relations Committee.

Newcomers Club welcomes members

The Newcomers Club of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills invites newcomers, those who have moved into the community within the past two years, to join the club.

The club offers many activities including tennis, bridge, golf and book groups plus a monthly TGIF wine and cheese party.

Alto-View Newcomers

The Alto-View Newcomers' Club, a nonprofit oganization serving families in both Los Altos and Mountain View, regularly sponsors a variety of activities, including wine tastings, moms and tots get-togethers, a book club and tennis and pot luck dinners.

Habitat hikes, pond prowls

The Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District welcomes volunteers to be outdoor recreation leaders. These folks work with small groups of students on habitat hikes through oak woodlands as well as on "pond prowls" where students explore a fresh water pond community. outings.

A comprehensive hands-on training program will be held on Tuesdays this fall.

For those interested, there will be an informational meeting at the district office at 7 p.m. Tuesday, 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos.

Classes for aspiring leaders

Leadership Education Advancement, or LEAD, a community involvement education course sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation, is seeking participants for a monthly course aimed at persons interested in taking on a leadership role.

Classes start this month at various locations in Los Altos and will be held once a month for eight months.

This is the fourth year for the course.
