O'Brien to Stanford

De Anza College baseball coach Mark O'Brien, a St. Francis High graduate, has been hired as an assistant coach at Stanford University. O'Brien, 28, guided the Dons to a third-place finish in the Coast Conference last season. He played for San Jose State in 1991 and '92 and then spent four years assisting at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Trailblazer sign-ups

The fifth annual Trailblazer Race, a 5K/10K run along the Stevens Creek Trail, is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at Charleston Park in Mountain View. There will also be a three-mile nature walk for those who don't run. Race-day registration starts at 7 a.m. and costs $24 for adults and $13 for those age 12 and under. Proceeds will be used to protect the Stevens Creek Trail and wildlife corridor. For more information, call 903-6067.

Hit the slopes

Sundancer Ski Club, a non-profit organization serving the Mid-Peninsula and South Bay, is recruiting new members for the 1998-99 ski season. Alpine and Nordic skiers and snow boarders are welcome.
