The 10-year-old qualified for the invitational by reaching the semifinals of the Northern California sectionals in June. After losing in the first round of the regional to a top player from Southern California, Bryce went on to the finals of the back draw. Along the way, he beat the No. 1 player from Arizona, and played a three-hour, three-set match against a player from Tracy. An hour later and exhausted, Bryce had to play in the finals and was defeated by the top player from Nevada in a tough 6-7, 5-7 match. Bryce has been recommended for a wild card spot in the Nationals for his extraordinary display of good sportsmanship and high level of play. The Nationals will be held next month in Dallas. This past summer Bryce played No. 1 singles on the 12-and-under United States Tennis Association (USTA) team based at Stanford. The team advanced to the sectionals in Sacramento, where Bryce defeated Sacramento's top player by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Other members of the local team included Greg Sawka and Darius Filsuf from Los Altos. |
