Lancers still perfect in tennis after 5-2 win over Saratoga

he St. Francis High girls tennis team kept its perfect record intact after beating Saratoga 5-2 last Thursday at Cuesta Park.

The Lancers entered the week with a 7-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the SCVAL De Anza Division. The loss dropped reigning league champ Saratoga to 7-2, 3-1 in the division.

"It was a good win for the program," said St. Francis coach Gary Dinneen. "It shows we're on the rebound and playing to our abilities."

The Lancers posted wins at No. 2 and 3 singles and swept the doubles.

No. 2 player Laura Boskovich won 6-4, 6-0, while No. 3 Aruna Balakrishnan pulled out a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory. Doubles winners were Libby Gilpin/Erin Hannon, Sarah Delva/Sarah Collins and Molly Redding/ Jenny Berrueta.

On Sept. 22, St. Francis beat Mountain View 6-1 at Cuesta.

Gunn also won both its matches last week to go to 4-1 overall, 1-1 in the De Anza.

The Titans opened the week with a 4-3 home win over Monta Vista on Sept. 22. Gunn winners included Li-Ying Wang and Lauren Glasscock at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. The Titans' top two doubles teams, Tanya Cheng/Michelle Feng and Belin Liu/Irene Yang, also prevailed.

A day later, Gunn edged Lynbrook 4-3 in a non-league match. Three of the Titans' wins came in doubles.

Moving to the Private Schools Athletic League, Pinewood beat host Redwood Christian 7-0 Sept. 22 for its first win of the year. All the Panthers' victories came in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-1 win by top player Melanie LaVaute.

Cross Country

Los Altos High's Andrew Hill won his second cross-country meet of the young season Sept. 22, capturing the 2.3-mile Central Park Invitational in Santa Clara.

Steve Perry placed eighth in the boys competition and the Eagles finished third overall. The Los Altos girls took fifth.

Mountain View grabbed sixth on the girls' side, while the boys wound up 10th. The Spartans' top finishers were Tonia Giraud (8th) and David Young (28th).

Girls water polo

The Mountain View High girls water polo team pounded visiting Los Altos 10-3 in the SCVAL El Camino Division opener for both squads.

Marie Marsman scored five goals for the Spartans, while Meredith Legenos and Laresa Cervantes notched two each.
