In addition, the Y will present Distinguished Service Awards to seven local volunteers, including Los Altos Hills resident Gay Krause for her work at the El Camino branch. For more information, call 842-3553. Mediation program basic training course The Los Altos Mediation Program is offering a 25-hour basic mediation training course. The training deals with conflicts related to neighbors, tenants, small claims and employment disputes. The program will be held Oct. 23-24, 30 and 31 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. Cost is $300 and the course is limited to 24 persons. For more information, call 941-5732. Town Choir rehearsals The second annual Hit Parade Night concert and dance is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Los Altos Youth Center. Rehearsals of the nostalgic music of 1948 are held each Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, located at Cuesta Drive and El Monte Avenue. Singers are invited to join the choir and sing hits of yesteryear, including "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" and "Slow Boat to China." For more information, call 948-9000. Los Altos Hills pathways hike The Los Altos Hills Pathways Committee is hosting a hike on the town's paths from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The event will begin at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road. A choice of walks, some more hilly than others, is available. West Bay Opera preview Thursday West Bay Opera Guild will present a Preview of Rossini' s "The Italian Girl in Algiers" 8 p.m., Thursday, at the Palo Alto Cultural Center, 1313 Newell Road. Maestro David Sloss will discuss the opera and principal singers will present selected arias from the opera. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served by members of the Guild. Performances of "The Italian Girl in Algiers" are October 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, at the Lucie Stern Theatre. For ticket information, call 424-9999, Monday through Friday,1-6 p.m. Mixed paper recycling begins in Mtn. View The city of Mountain View and Foothill Disposal are adding mixed paper and cardboard collection to the city's curbside recycling program. Materials such as junk mail, magazines, envelopes, catalogs, cereal boxes, notebook paper or cardboard boxes can now be recycled through the new program instead of tossed in the trash. The program will be phased in citywide over a five-week period, with single-family homes receiving a black recycling bin for mixed paper or cardboard. Cardboard must be flattened, with dimensions not to exceed 2-by-2 feet, and must be stacked next to collection bins or toters. For more information, call 903-6227. Newcomers Club welcomes members The Newcomers Club of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills invites newcomers, those who have moved into the community within the past two years, to join the club.
