Rotary AIDS documentary receives Humanitarian Award

"The Los Altos Story," a documentary about AIDS produced by the Rotary Club of Los Altos, received the International Humanitarian Award for Film presented at the "Fete d'Excellence" in Geneva, Switzerland, held in August to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Gunter Hermann, Rotary International's alternate representative to the United Nations, accepted the Medal of Excellence award on behalf of Dushan "Dude" Angius and the Rotary Club of Los Altos.

The Medal of Excellence medallion was presented in a special recognition ceremony in September to Dushan "Dude" Angius at the Los Altos Rotary Club by President Mel Kahn.

The idea for the film originated when Angius issued a call to action in 1989 as president of the Rotary Club after his son, Steve, was afflicted and later died of the disease.

The Rotary AIDS Project, established to raise funds and produce the film, continues to promote AIDS awareness through the distribution of "The Los Altos Story."

The 30-minute AIDS awareness film, which tells the story of how the lives of three Rotarians were changed by AIDS, was created in association with Emmy award-winning producer Greg Hoblit and written and directed by former NBC News correspondent Robin Young.

Translated into six languages, the film has been distributed worldwide. As a result, Rotary Clubs from around the world have initiated public information campaigns focused on AIDS education.
