Hoping to finish cleanup from the last rains before the next ones hit, the Los Altos Hills Town Council awarded three contracts at a special meeting Sept. 28.

The council approved a $169,000 allocation from the capital improvement budget and awarded a contract to Pfister Excavating for the Edgerton Road median slope stabilization project.

According to Sheryl Proft, associate engineer for the town, the project includes removing material that slid on the site in last winter's rains and replacing it with more stable material. A subdrain will be installed in the median to drain the hillside behind the median, Proft said.

A contract involving a cost-share agreement with private property owners for landslide repair on La Cresta drive was also approved.

The council awarded a $56,240 contract to Stoloski & Gonzalez, Inc. to address drainage and erosion problems at the outfall of an existing 12-inch storm drain that drains the end of Saddle Court, draining towards Berry Hill Court.

Public Works Manager Jim Rasp said that storm water from the storm drain "has caused severe erosion on the hillside and extensive siltation in the back yard of the downhill property owners."

"We're pushing to get work done prior to the rainy season," said City Manager Jeff Peterson.

The council on Sept. 28 approved an agreement with Proft's new employers, Stevenson, Porto & Pierce, Inc. of San Francisco, which allows the town to use Proft's services during the transition to a new associate engineer.

Proft recently joined the consulting firm for a job that will ultimately allow her to work out of her home in the Placerville area, Peterson said. The agreement provides for Proft to work for the town as a consultant through the end of the year while the position is filled, and to be the primary trainer for the town's new associate engineer.

Council members also endorsed Measure H on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The measure, if approved, will provide funds for the renovation and repair of schools in the Los Altos School District.

Peterson said the council's meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled.

Meeting on Sept. 28 to approve contracts "gave us a week's jump on construction," Peterson said about the meeting changes. "We have had a big push of projects through the planning department that then required council action. Now there's a bit of a lull."

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Los Altos Hills Town Council will be Oct. 21.
