Graham, Hannemann, Williams for MV-LA

Editorial

Incumbents Sue Graham and Judy Hannemann have been part of a Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District board that has distinguished itself well in recent years.

Under Graham and Hannemann's watch, the board selected, in Rich Fischer, a wonderful superintendent successor to Don Phillips. They have also overseen the five-year construction project at Los Altos and Mountain View high schools that is currently under budget.

We find no reason to make a change here, so we're sticking with the incumbents. One reservation about Hannemann, however, is that she has been on the board since 1981 - that means lots of experience but 17 years - possibly 21 - is too long.

We choose David J. Williams over Catherine Knipe for the final open seat for one reason only: Williams has had experience as a trustee, having served four years on the school board of the Whisman School District in Mountain View. As the parent of two high school students, he would also have some empathy for issues directly affecting students, such as discussion over closed campuses. Knipe also has a student in the district, and she offers good skills and ideas. But we feel the other three are more qualified.
