Award-winning speaker at Historical Society

The Los Altos Hills Historical society invites the public to hear award-winning author Ellen Kindt McKenzie at 3 p.m. this Sunday at the Los Altos Hills Town Hall, 26379 Fremont Road., Los Altos Hills.

McKenzie is one of the four speakers sponsored each year by the Historical Society. McKenzie has won awards for her children's novels. In 1991 her novel "Stargone John" won the Bay Area Book Reviewers award.

She will be talking on how one tackles writing fantasy. Refreshments will be served.

Picasso and the War Years

Kathleen Jenkins, a Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco docent, will review 80 of Picasso's most powerful works at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 21, at the Los Altos Library.

Picasso's works are on view at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco through Jan. 3. Jenkins will review the exhibit and the political implications of Picasso's artistic response accomplished between the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

The exhibit also includes posters, newspapers and photographs from the period to give a sense of the historical context in which Picasso was working.

C.A.R. luncheon set for Oct. 24

The seventh annual C.A.R (Community Association for Rehabilitation Inc.) luncheon will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 24, at Hyatt Rickeys in Palo Alto.

The emcee will be Los Altos writer Mary Jane Moffat. Books will be available for sale and autographing both before and after lunch. The authors are dynamic speakers who share anecdotes and read excerpts from their works.

Proceeds will benefit C.A.R. Each year the association serves more than 2,200 individuals and their families with disabilities.

Mediation program basic training course

The Los Altos Mediation Program is offering a 25-hour basic mediation training course. The training deals with conflicts related to neighbors, tenants, small claims and employment disputes. The program will be held Oct. 23-24, 30 and 31 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.

Cost is $300 and the course is limited to 24 persons. For more information, call 941-5732.

Town Choir rehearsals

The second annual Hit Parade Night concert and dance is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Los Altos Youth Center.

Rehearsals of the nostalgic music of 1948 are held each Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, located at Cuesta Drive and El Monte Avenue.

Singers are invited to join the choir and sing hits of yesteryear, including "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" and "Slow Boat to China."
