Laurie Smith for Santa Clara County sheriff

Editorial

Ruben Diaz talks a good game. And he is clearly more comfortable around people than fellow assistant sheriff and sheriff's candidate Laurie Smith. But the duties of county sheriff go beyond public relations - way beyond.

When it comes to initiating and improving department programs, and having the confidence and backing of employees, Smith appears to have a clear edge. Which is why she is getting our endorsement.

Smith has the overwhelming support of the deputy sheriffs, and she has started such programs as the citizen police academy and the regional auto theft task force. Los Altos Hills councilman Sid Hubbard, who we think is a good judge of character, also has endorsed Smith.

Diaz, who has an important endorsement in Los Altos Hills resident and former San Jose police chief Lou Cobarruviaz, said he formed the county's domestic violence task force, and has pushed for "partnerships" with other agencies. Admirable, yes. But Diaz seems more prone to generalities, whereas Smith can offer more specifics. We appreciate that in a sheriff.
