More than 65 people met Oct. 10 at the American Legion Hall on First Street in Los Altos, to honor Los Altos sculptor, R. J. Truman.

The artist was being honored for her work on the Veterans Memorial, "Cradle of Liberty," dedicated this past Fourth of July in Shoup Park.

The attendees were entertained with a talk by Truman, who told how she soul-searched, researched and labored over her idea for the memorial.

She spent countless hours at the library studying the effects of war on the survivors before coming up with her idea. She also explained the process she went through going from a concept sketch to the finished casting. She also participated in the foundation construction, the movement of the statue from the Oakland foundry to its setting in Shoup Park. She spent many hours, actually days, searching for the right rocks for the statue to be placed upon.

The proceedings were led by the Post Commander, Lewis B. Miller Sr. Truman was introduced by Jay Brandon, one of the co-chairmen of the memorial committee. The appreciation dinner was well attended by a cross section of people from the Los Altos area.

There will be a special ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial in Shoup Park, on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The program will include music, speakers, flags, taps and other activities.
