Special to the Town Crier

Halloween hoopla comes to downtown Los Altos at noon, Oct. 31, with myriad activities bound to put smiles on the scariest monster.

The Los Altos Village Association will host its annual Halloween Spooktacular on Main and State streets with the intention of safe alternative to trick-or-treating at night.

"Los Altos has always been a place to provide a safe Halloween alternative for young children and their parents," said Kathleen Byrne, executive director of the association. "The city is committed to provide fun in a protected environment with an afternoon of entertainment and activities and see the Rotary Tree turn into a Halloween Tree."

New this year is a display of Farmer Mike's large pumpkins. He is known for exhibiting large pumpkins at the annual Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. His huge pumpkin will be delivered with special care to the Community Plaza at the corner of Main and State streets where Farmer Mike will carve his niche by applying the finishing touches to the orange monster.

A costume contest will begin in the Plaza at 4 p.m. with prizes awarded for the most creative costumes in three age categories, including 3 years and younger, 4 to 6 years and 7 to 10 years.

Entertainment will include face painting, a surprise appearance from a local celebrity at a secret "Witching Hour," and candy corn guessing contests.

In addition, more than 100 storefront window paintings will be on display, painted by local students.
