A list of honorable mentions

Since we couldn't squeeze every potential hall of famer into the story, here's a brief rundown of some other athletes worthy of induction:

Joe Cannon - An all-CCS goalkeeper for the St. Francis High boys soccer team (class of 1994), who went on to star at Santa Clara University. Spent part of this past season with the San Jose Clash of Major League Soccer.

John Charles - An all-league quarterback at Mountain View High (1989) who holds passing records at Foothill College and Portland State. Later went to camp with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Emily Dirksen - The graduate of Gunn High (1987) and Stanford University was part of the U.S. women's rowing team that won the world championship in 1996. She is currently training for the 2000 Olympics.

Stacy Evans - The St. Francis graduate (1994) was an all-league volleyball player who just completed a stellar career at Villanova University. She holds school records for career block solos, block assists, hitting percentage and kills per game.

Tim Hanley - A standout goalkeeper for the Los Altos High (1978) and Foothill College soccer teams. He went on to play professionally for the San Jose Earthquakes and Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Regina Holan - The Homestead High graduate (1995) led the Mustangs to a CCS title in girls soccer as a sophomore and was a Parade All-American her senior year. Now stars at sweeper for No. 7-ranked Portland State.

Willie Howard - Starred in football, basketball, wrestling and track at Los Altos High (1996). Currently starts at defensive tackle for the Stanford University football team.

Anna Kraus - Led the St. Francis girls soccer team to CCS titles in 1997 and 1998 and helped her club team, the Central Valley Mercury, to three national titles. Now a freshman starter on No. 3-ranked Santa Clara.

Alberto Montoya - Standout soccer player at Los Altos High (1993) and Santa Clara University. Made the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, but was sidelined by an injury. Played briefly with the San Jose Clash in 1998.

Jack Myers - The Los Altos High graduate (1971) was selected as one of the top 10 athletes in school history. He won three doubles titles in tennis, started at fullback for the 1970 championship football team. Went on to play football at the University of Utah.

Kendal Smith - An all-league football player at Mountain View High (1984). He switched from halfback to receiver at Utah State, where he excelled as well. Played briefly for the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL.

Zack Walz - The former St. Francis football star (1994) was the WCAL's Most Valuable Lineman as a senior. He moved to linebacker at Dartmouth College, where he finished his career as the school's third-leading tackler. Now plays for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
