Mountain View High's music department received the Mayor's Award from the city of Mountain View this month.

A nine-member jury representing all facets of the community selected the department for putting Mountain View on the map through its national award-winning performances and for demonstrating community spirit through its in free concerts and participation in city parades.

"This is a tremendous honor for our music students. They are talented and generous with spirit and enthusiasm and are well deserving of the recognition," said music director Robin Kramer.

Held every two years, the Mayor's Award program is that city's opportunity to say thank you by honoring programs and projects that make Mountain View a better place to live. The high school music department was among the 13 recipients honored, receiving one of two Educational Contribution Awards. This is the first time the music department has received the Mayor's Award. The band was honored Oct. 13.

De Anza College in Cupertino made national headlines this month in the Oct. 15 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. The music magazine recognized De Anza as one of the top 10 "most respected schools" of its kind in the country.

De Anza was the only Northern California community college to be named on the list. All of the community colleges on the list had a high percentage of full-time faculty, a low student-teacher ratio and small class sizes of about 25 students. Each of the schools recorded sending a high number of students into four-year universities or directly into the job market.

De Anza is part of the Foothill - De Anza Community College District based in Los Altos Hills. More than 23,700 students attend De Anza. According to the California State University Chancellor's Office, more De Anza students transferred to the CSU system in fall 1997 than from any other community college.
