SF stays on top

St. Francis upped its record to 8-0 in the De Anza Division with a 7-0 trouncing of Mountain View last Thursday at Rengstorff Park.

The Lancers (12-2 overall) won all seven matches in straight sets, including No. 1 player Emily Najour's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Monserratt Corsino.

On Oct. 13, St. Francis beat Los Altos 5-2 at Cuesta Park.

Gunn breaks even

Gunn evened its record to 4-4 in the De Anza with a 4-3 win at Monta Vista last Thursday.

The Titans (7-4 overall) won all three doubles matches and got a straight-set victory from Lauren Glasscock at No. 4 singles.

Pinewood goes to 8-0

The Mountain View High tennis team entered the week still seeking its first win, but coach Kathy White is proud of her bunch nonetheless.

"I have to give them credit," said the first-year coach. "These girls are holding up really well considering the circumstances."

The circumstances involve being moved into the SCVAL De Anza Division this season, which is considerably stronger than the El Camino Division. In fact, some consider the De Anza one of the toughest divisions in the Central Coast Section.

And to make matters worse, Mountain View is playing shorthanded. The Spartans only have eight players on the varsity team, which means they have to forfeit the No. 3 doubles spot in each match.

These two factors go a long way in explaining Mountain View's record. The team sunk to 0-10 after losses to Los Gatos and St. Francis last week.

The Spartans' most successful players have been senior Wen-Ai Yu and junior Denise Olmos, who play No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Each came into the week with three wins.

Pinewood ran its Private Schools Athletic League record to 8-0 last week with a pair of 7-0 wins.

The Panthers blanked Fremont Christian Oct. 13 and Woodside Priory last Thursday. Pinewood's No. 1 player, Melanie LaVaute, lost just three games over the two matches.
