Homestead wins No. 2

The SCVAL El Camino Division football title may be at stake this Friday when Los Altos travels to Gunn High at 3:15 p.m. And the showdown will be a battle between similar teams who have the ability to put up a lot of points.

Los Altos (3-0, 5-1) and Gunn (2-0, 4-2) both run out of the wing-T offense to maximize talent, and each has dominated the El Camino field thus far.

Los Altos has won four games in a row and Gunn had won four straight until a heartbreaking 34-33 non-league loss to rival Palo Alto last Saturday night at Foothill College.

The Titan offense rushed for 379 yards and tallied four touchdowns against Paly, but let a 27-13 fourth quarter lead slip away in the loss. This was Gunn's 12th consecutive loss to Paly.

Gunn senior Anthony Butler ran for a team-high 183 yards and scored three touchdowns, while fullback Lei Likio added 113 yards and a touchdown.

Paly scored with just 35 seconds to go to take a 34-33 lead. But the Titans rallied only to miss a 42-yard field goal with one second remaining.

Both Los Altos and Gunn barely missed the CCS playoffs last year. Each was hurt by controversial forfeits and a 7-7 tie when they met last season.

With a league crown at stake and both teams running the wing-T, Friday's game should provide plenty of entertainment.

Homestead won its second game of the year with a 12-7 win over Monta Vista last Friday night in an SCVAL De Anza Division match-up at Cupertino High.

The Mustangs (2-1, 2-4) came up big at the end, recovering a fumble at the Matadors' 5-yard line midway through the fourth quarter.

They parlayed the turnover into the game-winning score by David Tucker, who scored from two yards out with 6:30 to play. Tucker rushed for 63 yards on 11 carries to lead Homestead.

The Mustangs play at Fremont High at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a non-league contest.
