Participating stores displaying the smiling pumpkin posters in windows will provide bewitching trick-or-treat items from noon to 4 p.m. The Association is conducting the celebration as a safe alternative to trick-or-treating at night. Kathleen Byrne, executive director of the downtown business association, said the city is committed to providing fun in a protected environment with an afternoon of entertainment and activities. The Los Altos Recreation Department is sponsoring Halloween-themed window art by local students in more than 100 store windows. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative store windows. Entertainment in the Community Plaza, at the intersection of State and Main, will start at 3:30 p.m., with pumpkin carving by Farmer Mike, bringing his large display of pumpkins. He is known for exhibiting large pumpkins at the annual Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. Entertainment in the plaza will include spooky music by a children's disc jockey, and costumed goblins doing the "Monster Mash." The Los Altos Police Department will offer Halloween safety tips. There also will be face-painting opportunities. At 4 p.m., a costume contest will be held with awards provided for the most creative costumes in three age categories: 3 years and younger, 4 to 6 years old and 7 to 10 years old. |
