Joint city committee looks at day-worker issues

At the invitation of the city of Mountain View, the Los Altos City Council appointed two Los Altos council members to a joint city ad hoc committee to study the current status of day workers.

At its meeting Oct. 13, the Los Altos City Council appointed council members Lou Becker and King Lear to the committee.

The purpose of the group will be to review the current status of the day-worker issue; to meet with representatives of the day worker center to review the work of the center and identify their issues; to meet with local businesses that have expressed an interest in recent months regarding this issue; and develop potential strategies for consideration by the two city councils, said Los Altos City Manager Phil Rose in a staff report.

City approves first floor offices

At its Oct. 13 meeting, the Los Altos City Council approved a use permit to allow offices, instead of retail, on the ground floor of the building at 343 Second St., at the corner of Foothill Expressway and San Antonio Road.

This will allow the primary occupant of the building, the internationally known David and Lucile Packard Foundation, to expand its office space to the first floor.

Headquarters of the Foundation are at 300 Second St. The Foundation also leases office space at 496 First St. and recently purchased the office building at 175 S. San Antonio Road, said senior city planner Jim Mackenzie in a staff report.

Both the Los Altos Village Association and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce supported the change in use permit.

"The Packard foundation is a highly valued community resource, which has contributed to several worthwhile projects benefiting Los Altos," said LAVA president Fred Sischka. "Los Altos should do all it can to ensure the Packard Foundation continues to maintain its base of operation here."
