Town Crier Staff Report

Four candidates are running for three seats on the five-member Mountain View School District Board of Trustees. Each of the elected candidates will serve four-year terms. Carol Fischer is unopposed for a two-year seat on the board.

Mountain View, which includes five K-5 schools and one middle school, started this academic year with the sale of its first $8 million in bonds from the $36 million bond measure voters approved last April, the re-opening of Huff School and discussions about decreased enrollment, which could affect district revenues.

The following candidates will be on the Nov. 3 General Election Ballot:

Roger C. Noel, 46, is an information technology engineer with an master's degree from Iona College and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Mercy College. A 16-year resident with one child attending school in the district, he has served on the Slater School Site Council for two years; was a member of the Slater PTA; worked as a classroom aide; and currently serves as a commissioner for the Mountain View Parks and Recreation Department. Noel's goals include providing concentrated English instruction to children who are not proficient in English as early in their school years as possible; making current information technologies available to all students; and ensuring that the district continues to retain and attract the very best teachers.

Nancy M. Mucha (incumbent), 59, is a middle school teacher and counselor with a bachelor's degree in teaching of English from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Purdue University. A 20-year resident with two children who attended district schools, Mucha has been involved with the Mountain View School District as a parent, educator and board member.

Mucha's goals include providing a consistent curriculum at all district schools with equal access to that curriculum; advocating for all parents to become active partners in the education of their children; and fostering a "community village" setting wherein respect for personal differences and diversity becomes a uniform theme.

Alma Estiva, 34, is a school parent participant. As an eight-year resident and the mother of four children at Graham and Landels schools, Estiva has served as a school site council member, a PTA board member, a site representative for Bond Measure D; a participant in district-wide committees; and a classroom volunteer.

Estiva's goals include supporting training for integrating technological tools in school curriculum; providing creative solutions for bilingual education; and improving liaisons between schools and community businesses/individuals.

Rose Marie Filicetti (incumbent), 46, is a former banker with a master's degree in finance and banking. As a 14-year resident with three children at Slater, Huff and Graham schools, Filicetti was the co-chair of the district's bond campaign, which passed with an 83 percent majority vote. She was the executive director of the Santa Clara County School Boards Association, and has volunteered in many community and district-wide programs. Estiva's goals include creating a school climate of safety, respect, challenge, and support; articulating curriculum that links standards, assessment and accountability; and investing in quality instruction, staff development and student enrichment.
