The program will include, the pledge of Allegiance by Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Danaher, invocation by Capt. George Wright, USN retired, and the national anthem will be sung by Michael Morris. Taps will be played by Sgt. Marty Silva of the 561st United States Air Force Band. Veterans, and their families attending the celebration, will have the opportunity to sing patriotic songs as a festive warm-up before the formal ceremony .Guest speaker will be Dr. Joseph McNamara, research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Harold L. Miller, American Legion national commander, said it's our moral duty to make veterans feel appreciated by attending a celebration on Veteran's Day. "Start by thanking members of your own family who either served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Call family members and thank them for serving and tell them you are proud of them," Miller said. "The more people turn out for a memorial service, the more profound the debt of gratitude to those who served." Miller said we should remember veterans, especially those who use wheelchairs and artificial limbs, as a result of battle scars that will never heal, as well as those who were taken captive and whose absence remain unaccounted for. The sixth annual ceremony has been moved from the Community Plaza to Shoup Park. It provides the opportunity for families to gather and enjoy a picnic lunch during the ceremony, organizers said. Veteran's Day in Los Altos is sponsored by Lew Miller, commander, Los Altos Post 558 of the American Legion, and Paul Nyberg, publisher of the Los Altos Town Crier. |
