Window painting contest winners

The Los Altos Village Association reported that 52 merchants and 105 children participated in its 35th annual Halloween window painting contest, held at storefronts along Main and State streets in downtown Los Altos.

Awards will be given for first-through-fifth place showings in grades four through eight. Awards will be distributed at the Nov. 18 Los Altos Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. The meeting takes place 7:30 p.m. at Los Altos City Hall, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

Peninsula Stitchery Guild treasure faire

The Peninsula Stitchery Guild is holding a treasure faire for the discriminating shopper 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. Items for sale include jewelry, wearable art, blueprinting supplies, handmade soap and paper and rubber stamps.

Hidden Villa tribute to Josephine

Help build a house of straw

Workshops in straw bale home construction will be held this weekend in Los Altos where a new straw bale home is under construction. Contractor Marc Boudart, an experienced straw bale home builder, will give a slide presentation at the site and then include workshop participants in the building process.

Workshops will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., this Saturday and Sunday. Fees are $30 for one day or $50 for both days; lunch is included. Participants should wear work clothes, close-toed shoes and heavy gloves and, if possible, bring a sledgehammer and bale saw.

Hidden Villa education center

Hidden Villa will hold a free public meeting to unveil plans for a new 3,000-square-foot Education Center, featuring sustainable or "green" construction, including straw bale walls. Hidden Villa architects will present drawings and a model of the building. The meeting is set for 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, at the Foundation for Global Community 222 High St., Palo Alto. Children's Home Society fund-raiser Friday

The Los Altos Hills Chapter of the Children's Home Society presents a holiday and fashion show preview by the Prestige of Palo Alto at 11:30 a.m., Friday, at the Sheraton Inn in Palo Alto.

A no-host cocktails hour starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. Price is $50. For more information, call 948-8576.

Local AAUW sponsors Lasers event

The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women is sponsoring a dinner and program before the San Jose Lasers/Nashville Noise basketball game that tips off at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12. The Lasers are a professional women's basketball team, part of the American Basketball League.

Anne Cribbs, 1960 Olympic gold medalist and co-founder of the ABL, will be speaking on

"Women and Girls Playing the Game," at 6 p.m. at the San Jose Event Center's Aerobics Room, Seventh and San Carlos streets, on the campus of San Jose State University.

"Women's sports activity at the school, college and professional level have long been overshadowed by media attention on the exorbitant contracts awarded to male athletes," said Sue Klarreich, a Los Altos resident and AAUW events coordinator.

Tickets are $20 and include a buffet dinner, program and ticket to the game. Reservations are due by Thursday. For more information, call 948-9262.
