Gunn was expected to wrap up the SCVAL El Camino Division title yesterday at Fremont. The Titans entered the match with a 12-0 division record. Fremont was 0-12.

A win would make Gunn 30-6 overall, the best mark in coach John Milkovich's 10 years at the helm. The Titans close the regular season at 7 p.m. tomorrow at second-place Cupertino.

Last week, Gunn beat Santa Clara and Mountain View in straight games.

Thursday's 15-4, 15-3, 15-2 win over the visiting Spartans took just 48 minutes. The Titans converted 35 of their 48 kill attempts (.646) and committed just four errors, according to Milkovich.

Jacqueline Heler had eight aces and 10 kills. Amy Milo had 13 kills and Amy Cole eight.

Mountain View, which fell to Wilcox earlier in the week, dropped to 2-9 in the division and 4-19 overall. The Spartans' conclude their season at 7 p.m. tomorrow against visiting Homestead.

It was fun while it lasted, but St. Francis' reign as the top-ranked volleyball team in the nation has likely come to an end.

The Lancers suffered their first defeat of the year last Saturday at the Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara, falling to Newport Harbor High in the final. Newport pulled out a 15-17, 15-12, 15-0, 16-4 victory.

Lancer coach Dave Gambelin has said one loss would drop St, Francis (32-1) from the top of the Vball.com poll, which was updated after the Town Crier went to press.

Before heading down south, St. Francis won both its SCVAL De Anza Division games early in the week to wrap up the league title with an 11-0 mark. On Oct. 26, the Lancers beat host Lynbrook 15-11, 15-3, 15-1. A day later, St. Francis took care of visiting Los Altos 15-9, 15-3, 15-3.

Pinewood needed a win yesterday at Immaculate Conception to finish undefeated in league play. The Panthers came into the match with an 11-0 mark in the Private Schools Athletic League and were 19-2 overall.

Pinewood claimed the league title last week with straight-game victories over Redwood Christian and Notre Dame-San Jose.

Lauren Smith-Hams had nine kills Thursday in Pinewood's 15-3, 15-1, 15-9 win against visiting Notre Dame. Angie Riches added eight kills and Sebnum Kimyacioglu had five.

"It was a dominating performance," said Pinewood coach Evan Barth.
