Gunn High School where she was involved with soccer, the Olympic Development Program and Region IV pool. She was also an ECYS concert mistrees on the violin, a four-year varsity soccer starter and a peer academic tutor. Hoa is graduate of Bellarmine College Preparatory School, where he was Service Club president, blood drive chairman, an English tutor, a National Merit Scholar and a participant in cross country. Los Altos residents Tyler Smith and Nate Cooper recently competed in the beginner men's 15-18 group in the cross-country mountain bike racing season. Smith finished first in the Fat Tire Festival in Tahoe this summer and first in the Briones Regional Park portion of the Bud Light California Mountain Bike Challenge Series. Cooper finished second place in two of the five Bud Light Series races and earned third overall in the state championship based on a cumulative score for the series. Smith, a junior at St. Francis High, currently runs cross country. Cooper starts on the varsity of water polo team at Los Altos High. Patrick Quaid, son of Richard and Karen Quaid of Mountain View, was recently chosen as a residence assistant of Hall at Luther College this year. Lauren Cheung of Los Altos was among the 16 students at Menlo School to have been named a National Merit Commended Student. Students who achieve the Commended status are honored for the exceptional academic promise they demonstrated on the Merit Program qualifying test. Julie Bishop, a 1994 graduate of Los Altos High, graduated in June from the University of California at Davis with a degree in civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering. She received highest honors at graduation and is employed by a structural engineering firm in Sacramento. Bobby de Vos, a 1994 graduate of Los Altos High School and the son of Karen de Vos of Los Altos, finished hiking 1,900 miles of the Appalaclucian Trail this past summer. He hiked the first 238 miles of the trail in the summer of 1997. de Vos plans to graduate from Georgia Tech with a degree in computer engineering in spring 1999. Luke J. Ireland, a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy, is spending fall term abroad, participating in the school's one-term program for students of French. He is one of 11 students to study French history, literature art and geography at the Externat Notre Dame in Grenoble, France. Ireland is the son of Hilary and John Ireland. He is a former Los Altos resident. He attended Pinewood School and was a National Merit Scholar finalist. Emma Martinez, Andrea Nelson and Amber Lahaderne, fourth graders at Slater School in Mountain View, were among the students chosen to display their artwork at the Community School of Music and Art on Martens Avenue in Mountain View. |
