Catherine Barnes, daughter of John and Carolyn Barnes of Los Altos, sang soprano with the Whitman College chorus during the school's "Sampler" Concert last month. A 1995 graduate of Los Altos High School, she is a foreign languages and literature major.
David Shur, son of Robert and Paulette L. Shur of Los Altos, played drums for the Ensemble during the Whitman Collegefall "Sampler" concert.
Eliot Michaelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Michaelson of Los Altos, was elected a dormitory proctor at Phillips Exeter Academy. A senior living in Peadbody Hall, he works in collaboration with the faculty living in the dorm to carry out the residential mission of the school.
Denali St. Amand of Menlo Middle School in Atherton was named a Distinguished Teacher by the TeachEach award program this month for excellence in teaching. St. Amand teaches Latin and leads the Language, Arts and Enrichment team at the school.
Patrick Quaid, son of Richard and Karen Quaid of Mountain View, recently became a member of the 1998-99 Luther College Collegiate Chorale. He is pursuing a major in psychology.
Christy Heaton, a social studies teacher at Homestead High School, was named 1998 Yearbook Adviser of the Year by the Journalism Education Association of Northern California Board of Directors. Heaton has served as a yearbook adviser for four years. She currently advises a 26-member staff.
Los Altos High School graduates David Brunner and Elena Nabieva were among the 53 Stanford University students to receive the President's Award for Academic Excellence in the Freshman Year last month. The award honors students who have exceptionally distinguished records that exemplify a strong program of study in their freshman year.
Terri O'Connor, director of marketing, communications and development at De Anza College, was named the Communicator of the Year by District VI of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations last month. The award recognizes a community college communications professional who has made a significant difference in marketing his/her institution.
Megan Slocum, daughter of Anthony and Ann Slocum of Los Altos, is studying earth science in Mexico and the Western United States this fall as part of Dartmouth College's foreign study program.
Michael Austin, son of Dennis R. and Janet Austin of Los Altos, is studying at London this fall through the Whitman College foreign study program.
Heidi Fernandez of Los Altos was named homecoming queen at Purdue University last month. Fernandez is a senior majoring in education. She is a graduate of St. Francis High School. She was selected from a field of 22 candidates through a campus-wide vote.
Lisa Aiko Onaga, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Eimei Onaga of Los Altos, recently participated in the Brown Meiklejohn program at Brown University. The program pairs students with faculty members in advising teams, as they help first-year students with the acedemic process.
