Not only did he win his head coaching debut, but he did so against a school he once worked at as an assistant. "It was a good way to start the season," Petersen said. "The effort was excellent." Petersen said his goal was to hold the Rams under 50 points. The Owls were on pace to do so at the half, leading 43-24. But Foothill let its guard down in the second half. "We got complacent with such a big lead," Peterson said. "We stopped playing half-court defense." This allowed Gavilan to get within five points in the game's closing minutes. But Foothill forward Billy Brooks wouldn't let the Rams get any closer. "He made some big plays in the last few minutes," Petersen said. "He sealed it for us." Brooks tallied 13 points in all, with nine of those coming in the second half. Foothill was led by Damien Strahorn, who had 19 points. Grady Wilburn added 17 points and Jimmy White 13. The Owls host Merced at 7 p.m. this Saturday. Volleyball The Foothill women's volleyball team continues to dominate the Golden Gate Conference, running its record to 9-0 last week. The Owls (21-3 overall) last Friday disposed of visiting Skyline in three games: 15-8, 15-2, 15-9. Foothill plays at San Francisco City at 6:30 p.m. today. Water polo The Foothill men's water polo team made a quick exit from the Northern California Championships. The Owls fell to host Diablo Valley 13-5 last Friday in the opening round. Foothill ends up with a 15-9-1 overall record. Football The Foothill football team destroyed Gavilan 66-24 last Saturday in Los Altos Hills. The Owls, ranked sixth in the state and third in Northern California, are 8-1 overall. This record should assure them a postseason bowl bid, possibly in the Dec. 5 Silicon Valley Bowl at Foothill. Foothill concludes the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday at San Mateo. |
