Late rally lifts Lancers to 28-25 win

he St. Francis football program has made a habit of peaking at the end of the season and carrying a full head of momentum into the Central Coast Section playoffs.

The Lancers (5-0, 7-3) displayed resiliency and came through in the clutch with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the final five minutes last Friday to edge visiting St. Ignatius 28-25. The win clinched St. Francis' 15th West Catholic Athletic League title since 1967.

The win helped the Lancers earn the third seed in the CCS Division I playoffs. St. Francis opens postseason play at home Saturday (7 p.m.) against No. 6 Hollister (5-5).

Trailing 25-13 late in the fourth quarter against St. Ignatius, the Lancers cut the margin to 25-20 on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Mike Mayon to Chase Lyman 29. St. Francis then won the game on a 6-yard scoring run by senior Jeff Endaya and a two-point conversion with just 45 seconds remaining.

Endaya led the Lancers with 131 yards rushing on 15 carries and tallied three touchdowns. Mayon finished by completing 9 of 17 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Mountain View

Mountain View ended its season last Friday with a 14-14 tie against Cupertino in an SCVAL El Camino Division match-up.

The Spartans (2-3-1, 3-6-1) led 14-7 at halftime, courtesy of Ricardo Lopez's 47-yard touchdown run and Ross Stanley's 47-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jim Starrett.

Lopez finished with 133 yards rushing, while Starrett completed 13 of 24 passes for 151 yards.

Gunn

Gunn concluded its season last Thursday with a convincing 38-10 drilling of Lynbrook at Cupertino High. The Titans finished the season at 4-2 in the El Camino Division, 6-4 overall.

Gunn pulled away from a 7-7 halftime tie to dismantle the Vikings with its effective ground game. The Titans rushed for 341 yards and were paced by senior Anthony Butler, who tallied 140 yards on just 12 carries.

Homestead

Homestead (2 1, 3-7) struggled down the stretch, but surprised the SCVAL De Anza Division field this season with its gutty play.

The Mustangs ended the year with a 48-13 loss at Wilcox last Thursday.

Ben Mika led Homestead with a pair of first-half touchdown runs (of 3 and 4 yards), as the Mustangs trailed just 14-13 at halftime.
