Town Crier Staff Report

The Los Altos Village Association will host the traditional downtown Los Altos tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., Friday, in the Community Plaza, Main and State streets.

The special event will usher in the holiday season with lights and music, including performances by the Los Altos Town Choir and a children's choir from the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain view.

The Town Choir comprises of a group of singers from neighborhood churches performing under the direction of David Stein, music director for Union Presbyterian Church in Los Altos.

Members of the choir will be dressed in holiday attire.

The choir will perform familiar sacred and secular Christmas carols. Michael Morris will sing "O Holy Night."

A special welcome will be administered by Fred Sischka, president of the Los Altos Village Association.

At 6:50 p.m., Los Altos Mayor Lou Becker will begin the tree lighting countdown. Once the tree is lit, the choir will sing Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus."

Other events include free train rides on a children's locomotive, courtesy of the local American Legion posts. Members spent a year and more than 4,000 hours on converting an old, surplus, 19-foot-long school bus into a 31-foot mock locomotive complete with an antique bell, whistle and hydraulic cowcatcher.

The ceremony also will feature ornament making for children and prize giveaways from KBAY Radio.
