Holiday happenings for newcomers

The Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Newcomers Club will have a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Dec. 9, at Prima Strada restaurant in Los Altos. For reservations call 494-7056 by Thursday. Another event will be the TGIF (wine & cheese party) this Friday. Call 948-5027 for information on this event. Newcomers welcomes residents who have moved here within the last two years. Wine author at history center

Wine historian Charles Sullivan will be present for a book signing at a holiday open house set for 7-9 p.m., Thursday, at the California History Center in the Trianon Building at De Anza College, Cupertino.

Sullivan will be signing copies of his latest, "A Companion to California Wine: An Encyclopedia of Wine and Winemaking from the Mission Period to the Present."

History House seeks docents

History House of Los Altos seeks volunteer docents to work one day every two months on Wednesday or Saturday afternoon. An informal orientation coffee will be held at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at History House, which is located in the Civic Center, behind the Main Library, 51 S. San Antonio Road. Free hearing evaluations offered by Pacific Hearing

The Los Altos-based Pacific Hearing Service offers free hearing evaluations Dec. 15 and 17 at the Community Services Agency, 204 Stierlin Road, in Mountain View. The value of such an evaluation is $160. The testing will take about an hour. Anyone interested in having their hearing checked on one of those two days should call Pacific Hearing Service to make an appointment, at 941-0664.

'Great Decisions' lectures announced

The Los Altos main library, the local Leagues of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women are presenting "Great Decisions" discussions, beginning Feb. 1, 1999. "Great Decisions" includes a briefing booklet that is the foundation of the series. The books will be available in January and cost $15. Participants must order and pay for them by Dec. 15. Copies will also be available at the library.

Topics include the Information Age, the Asian financial crisis, Latin America and the U.S. role in the United Nations.

The discussions will be 10 a.m. to noon, Mondays in February and March at the Los Altos Main Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road. Admission is free. For more information, call 967-8964.

Hidden Villa tribute to Josephine

Hidden Villa, an environmental farm in Los Altos Hills, is planning a night to remember founder Josephine Duveneck to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her death.
