Los Altos cops help with 'Gifts for Guns'

Two Los Altos police officers will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the San Jose Arena to help with the "Sharks Gifts for Guns" program presented by the San Jose Sharks hockey team and the Santa Clara County Police Chiefs Association.

Officers Brent Butler and Mark Macaulay will be helping with the effort to take guns off the streets and decrease the chance of accidental shootings. Sharks player Ron Sutter invites the public to turn in an unloaded gun and receive a gift in exchange.

Citizens participating are guaranteed complete amnesty and will not be required to show any identification. No pictures or fingerprints will be taken.

In return for a weapon, the citizen will receive a gift package that may include Sharks game tickets, donations from Ticketmaster, Target stores, Bass Tickets or Imperial Toys.

The arena is located at 525 W. Santa Clara St. in San Jose. Officers will be on hand in Parking Lot A, behind the arena.

Economic coordinator on half-time basis

Los Altos City Council members liked the idea of making the economic development coordinator position half-time. But they asked the city manager for a job description.

The position, formerly full time when filled by Carol Curran, has been vacant since she left the city in October 1997.

City Manager Phil Rose recommended to the council at its Nov. 24 meeting that the position be half time but combined with a half-time administrative analyst position to create one full-time position.

"It's doesn't seem like a fit to have the same person who is the economic coordinator to also be doing refuse and cable TV," said Councilman Francis La Poll.

Retaining existing businesses and recruiting new businesses "will continue to be an important function of the position," Rose said in a staff report.

But the city's focus should be different from that of the Chamber of Commerce or the Los Altos Village Association, he said.
