History House seeks docents History House of Los Altos seeks volunteer docents to work one day every two months on Wednesday or Saturday afternoon. An informal orientation coffee will be held at 9:30 a.m. today at History House, which is located in the Civic Center, behind the Main Library, 51 S. San Antonio Road. Coping with loss during the holidays The MidPeninsula Hospice Services presents a program from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, on "Coping with Loss During the Holidays." This is an opportunity for those struggling with loss to gather, discuss and learn ways for making the holiday season less stressful and more meaningful. Free hearing evaluations offered by Pacific Hearing Pacific Hearing Service is donating proceeds from hearing evaluations Dec. 17 and 22 to the Community Services Agency. The evaluations, which cost $160, will be given at the hearing center, 496 First St., Los Altos. The testing will take about an hour. Insurance companies will not be billed for the evaluations. Checks should be made out to the Community Service Agency, which helps needy area residents. The donation is not tax-deductible. Individuals interested in having their hearing checked on one of those two days may call Jennifer Lathrop at Pacific Hearing Service to make an appointment, at 941-0664. 'Great Decisions' lectures announced The Los Altos main library, the local Leagues of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women are presenting another year of "Great Decisions" discussions, beginning Feb. 1, 1999. "Great Decisions," sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, includes a briefing booklet which is the foundation of the series. The books will be available for distribution in January and cost $15. Participants must order and pay for them by next Tuesday. For those who want to attend but don't want to purchase the book, copies will be available at the library. Topics include the Information Age, the Asian financial crisis, Latin America and the U.S. role in the United Nations. The discussions are scheduled 10 a.m. to noon, every Monday in February and March, with the exception of Feb. 15. Lectures are held in the Community Room of the Los Altos main library, 13 S.
