There are few times in Los Altos Hills council history when the council chamber has had a standing-room-only crowd, but the Dec. 1 presentation honoring outgoing council member Sid Hubbard had appreciative residents pushing to get in.

"We should have more presentations to get big attendances like this, but I think the character and personality of Sid Hubbard is the drawing card," said Los Altos Hills Mayor Bob Johnson.

"He has a masterful grasp of the important issues that face Los Altos Hills, and he transferred his business experience to the daily workings of the town," he said.

Hubbard did not run in the recent election and the presentation was the first time the town of Los Altos Hills held a special meeting to honor a departing council member. Presentations usually occur during the swearing in of new council members.

Hubbard served eight years on the council and two years as mayor.

Johnson said Hubbard was the best mayor Los Altos Hills had ever had.

In addition, he was involved in the building program for the YMCA fitness center adjoining El Camino Hospital, the Los Altos Hills County Fire District, and volunteering for many community activities.

After additional comment by fellow council members, the Los Altos Hills staff presented a personal history of Hubbard's experiences as a council member.

Photographs, town newsletter articles and other mementos submitted by friends were compiled in a bound book and presented to Hubbard.

"A big crowd like this makes me nervous, but I'm pleased to have you here," Hubbard said to his large audience.

"Everyone should serve on the council once in their lifetime. From now on, I am going to read famous authors instead of staff reports," he said.

Longtime Los Altos Hills council member Bill Siegel said he had the privilege of working with both Sid Hubbard and his father.

"When I was counsel for the county of Santa Clara, one of my bosses was Sid's father," Siegel said.

"Bud Hubbard was one of the best county supervisors we had and was influential in building the expressway system that runs throughout the county. I was pleased when Sid was elected to the council.," he said.

The city council special meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m., and the audience adjourned to the home of Jan and Bob Fenwick in Los Altos Hills for the continuing celebration and tribute.
