Parents packed the Los Altos City Council chambers, camcorders in hand, to see their children honored for their efforts in the Red Ribbon Week essay and poster contest.

"We can be proud of our children who will be our leaders into the 21st century," said Lucy Carlton, Los Altos Police Chief, at the Nov. 24 meeting, as she presented the prizes.

The Red Ribbon contest is a program to bring drug awareness to children in grades three through six.

The effort grew from a 1985 tragedy when a federal drug enforcement agent was murdered.

This year the theme, "How I can be drug free and healthy," encouraged students to focus on a healthy lifestyle, hobbies, how they choose friends.
