The Foothill women's volleyball team placed third in the state tournament by beating Reedley in five games last Sunday in Visalia. The Owls finish the year at 19-1.

The Foothill College football team enjoyed one of those magical seasons that doesn't come around too often. And last Saturday, the Owls topped off their memorable year in style.

Foothill (10-1) utilized its versatile offense and powerful defense in a convincing 40-26 win over West Valley in the second annual Kiwanis-Silicon Valley Bowl in Los Altos Hills.

This capped the best year in Foothill history, dating back to its first season in 1959. Foothill averaged 39 points and 440 yards per game, while yielding 17 points and only 240 yards per contest this season.

"We were a little sloppy against West Valley, but it's nice to win it," said coach Marshall Sperbeck. "We surpassed all expectations this season."

The Owls jumped out to a 27-14 halftime lead on the Vikings (6-5). They scored on a pair of touchdown passes from freshman quarterback Travis Cole - one to sophomore T.C. Everett and the other to freshman DeWayne Eison - and two touchdown runs from freshman running back Peter Harris.

While the rugged Foothill defense held the high-scoring Vikings in check, the Owls added a pair of Cole touchdown runs to ice the game.

Eight Owls made all-conference this season, including sophomore receiver Errol Johnson, who also earned All-America honors with 72 receptions and 14 touchdowns. Johnson played less than a quarter on Saturday, leaving with a concussion.

Foothill's win over West Valley avenged a 36-29 overtime loss in last year's Silicon Valley Bowl.

The Foothill women's basketball team edged host American River 66-64 last Friday. Sheree Taft scored the game-winning lay-up on a pass from Stacy Hanstad as time ran out. Ekuah Ramsey led the Owls with 20 points and six rebounds, while Line Kongeskov added 14 points.
